CCH Audio Seminar Focuses on Just Enacted Jobs Bill: How Best to Use New Hiring, Retention Incentives

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., March 19, 2010) – The tax benefits to businesses of the recently enacted Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act will be the timely focus of a two-hour CCH telephone seminar on Friday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern; 12:00 p.m. Central; 11:00 a.m. Mountain; 10:00 a.m. Pacific. Speakers Mark Luscombe, JD, CPA, LLM and Vern Hoven, CPA, EA, MST will examine the important provisions of this new legislation and analyze the impact on taxpayers. Program Agenda

The seminar will make participants aware of significant new tax developments that can impact any business that hires employees, purchases equipment or does business internationally, as well as other provisions that were included in the legislation. Topics include:

  • $13 billion in hiring and retention incentives;
  • $1 billion from expanded Code Sec. 179 expensing;
  • Many provisions in effect immediately in 2010;
  • Forgiveness of Social Security taxes on wages paid to qualified new hires;
  • Extension of the enhanced Code Sec. 179 expensing rules for 2010 purchases;
  • Expansion of the Build America bonds program;
  • Expanded foreign account disclosure and withholding rules; and
  • Offset provisions, including deferral of worldwide interest allocation rules and an increase in corporate estimated taxes.

In addition, the presentation time will include opportunities for participants to phone or e-mail their most pressing questions to the speakers.

About the Speakers

Mark Luscombe, a CPA and attorney, is the Principal Federal Tax Analyst for CCH and a key member of the company’s Tax Legislation team tracking and analyzing legislation before Congress. Luscombe is the current developments chair of the Partnership Committee, American Bar Association Tax Section and regularly speaks on a wide range of tax topics.  In addition, Luscombe co-authors a biweekly tax strategies column for Accounting Today and authors a monthly tax trends column in CCH’s TAXES: The Tax Magazine.  Prior to joining CCH, he was in private practice for more than 20 years with several Chicago-area law firms where he specialized in taxation.

Vern Hoven, CPA, EA, MST is one of the most popular tax educators in the country. His dynamic presentations, books and articles combine the real-life experience of a practicing CPA and a licensed real estate broker with essential down-to-earth tax materials. Numerous state CPA Societies have named Hoven their “Tax Instructor of the Year” and he is a favorite for interviews on radio, television and in newspapers. Additionally, Hoven’s speaking skills earned him the coveted Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association. Hoven has served on many national boards, including the National Association of REALTORS® Legislative Committee and the Federal Tax Subcommittee. He also served as National Secretary and as National Director-at-Large for the National Real Estate Educators Association. He is a CPA and an Enrolled Agent, and he has a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the University of Denver's School of Law.
