Smart Charts, Legislative Developments Enhance CCH State Tax Reporters

(RIVERWOODS, ILL., May 16, 2006) – Subscribers to the State Tax Reporters on the CCH® Tax Research Network™ now have the benefit of state-specific Smart Charts and Legislative Developments that speed them to answers quicker than ever before. CCH, a Wolters Kluwer business is a leading provider of tax information, software and services (CCHGroup.com).

“Our exclusive Smart Charts have been very popular for multi-jurisdictional research, so now we’re making them available for each individual State Tax Reporter,” said Angela Darrow, CCH product manager. “Our new Legislative Developments feature is another addition that provides a quick way to keep up to date with the latest in state tax laws.”

Quick Answers

State-specific Smart Charts give quick answers to a wide variety of questions that arise in daily tax practice, such as:

  • Does the Illinois personal income tax include an AMT?
  • Are storage fees subject to sales tax in Florida?
  • Is tangible personal property taxable in Wisconsin?
  • When does construction work in progress become taxable in Arizona?
  • Does Texas have a managed audit program for sales and use tax?

To find the answers, users don’t have to search. They simply pick a state, pick one or more tax types – and, if desired, sub-topics. Then a click of the mouse brings up the answers. Depending on the taxes imposed by the state and the number of tax types and topics chosen, answers for up to 287 questions may be available.

With each quick answer, the Smart Chart also provides a link to the CCH State Tax Reporter discussion of the topic and a link to the supporting state statute or regulation.

“If researchers need a detailed explanation or the precise language of a statute, it’s available to them, but if all they need is a short answer – such as a rate or an exemption amount – they don’t need to go any further,” Darrow noted.

Shortcut to New Laws

Legislative Developments offer a shortcut to newly enacted state tax laws. For any state, users simply choose the tax types they’re interested in and one click later they have a summary of any bills that have been enacted. They can also link to Tax Day stories summarizing the new legislation and to the actual bill text itself.

“This is a great way to make sure that nothing has slipped by you,” Darrow noted. “You can see at a glance whether something has been enacted, then get as much detail as you need.”
