CCH Provides Guide To New Federal Privacy Rules For Financial Institutions

(Riverwoods, ILL., July 31, 2000) – As part of the price for greater regulatory freedom under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, financial institutions will have to comply with new regulations designed to protect their customers’ privacy, according to CCH INCORPORATED (CCH), a leading provider of banking, securities and financial services information. To help organizations and their advisers understand and apply the new requirements issued by various federal regulators, CCH has published the CCH Guide to Federal Privacy Rules for Financial Institutions. (504 pages, $49. To order, call 1-800-248-3248 or visit the CCH online store at http://onlinestore.cch.com.)

The handy, single-volume Guide provides in one place comprehensive coverage of the new financial privacy requirements, including full-text source documents as well as CCH’s authoritative explanations of the rules adopted by each of the federal regulators.

Specifically, the Guide contains the full text of the rules adopted by seven agencies: the four banking regulators (FDIC, FED, OCC and OTS) plus the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Trade Commission and the National Credit Union Administration. The Guide also contains the full text of the privacy provisions as they appear in the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act itself.

In addition, the Guide reproduces the text of the agency releases issued with the rule adoptions, which provides the agencies’ analysis of the final regulations and can give valuable insight into the agencies’ interpretation of the law.

CCH experts explain and comment on the rules, which include the requirement for financial institutions to provide notice to customers about privacy policies and practices, the conditions under which a financial institution may disclose nonpublic personal information about the consumers to non-affiliated third parties and the methods for consumers to prevent financial institutions from disclosing that information by "opting out."
