“Having a staff that understands the ins and outs of Medicare and Medicaid programs is an essential first step for any organization that participates in them,” said Wendy Wuchek, managing editor for CCH. “The Understanding series gives hands-on reimbursement professionals the exact tools they need to ensure their facilities receive the reimbursement to which they are entitled.”

Skilled Nursing Facilities, Rural Hospitals, Cost Reporting

Each book in the CCH Understanding Series contains best practices, checklists, flow charts outlining key processes and examples to help clarify more complicated situations, as well as a list of acronyms, a glossary of key terms and applicable primary source documents. The series is comprised of the following three new books:

  • Understanding Reimbursement for Skilled Nursing Facilities is a thorough guide to coverage and conditions of participation under the Skilled Nursing Facility Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS). Individual chapters detail SNF conditions of participation, Medicare coverage criteria, the SNF PPS Resident Classification System, SNF PPS per diem federal rates, SNF consolidated billing requirements, swing-bed facilities and medical review of SNF services.
  • Understanding Medicare Reimbursement to Small and Rural Hospitals focuses on payment systems for hospitals with special Medicare status. The book covers geographic classification and the Prospective Payment System (PPS) and devotes individual chapter-specific requirements and payment rules for rural referral centers, Medicare-dependent hospitals and sole community hospitals. In addition to addressing the issues for small and rural hospitals paid under PPS, Understanding Medicare Reimbursement to Small and Rural Hospitals includes a chapter on critical access hospitals (CAHs) that provides a detailed discussion of the requirements to be classified as a CAH, cost-based payment method under which CAHs are paid and other rules that apply specifically to CAHs .
  • Understanding and Optimizing Medicare Cost Reporting is a detailed yet understandable discussion of Medicare cost reporting for Prospective Payment System hospitals. Chapters cover the general rules of cost reporting, cost report reimbursement for PPS approved teaching hospitals, disproportionate share hospital adjustments, Medicare bad debts, settlement data, and tips for a successful audit. The goal of this book is to provide background, tips and tools to optimize the cost reporting process and effectively use the cost report as an internal financial tool.
