New CCH Book Draws Lessons For Professionals From Enron Failures
(RIVERWOODS, ILL., August 6, 2002) – Once the name of a
prosperous company, the word "Enron" now stands for a
business failure, an accounting and financial reporting failure, a
political failure and, most importantly of all, an ethical failure. In
a new book from CCH INCORPORATED (CCH), a leading provider of tax and
business information and software, noted authority and educator Arthur
L. Berkowitz dissects the elements of the Enron scandal and describes
the lessons to be learned from it. ENRON: A Professional's Guide to
the Events, Ethical Issues, and Proposed Reforms provides
perspective on what went wrong and what "Enron" means for
practitioners in auditing, accounting and finance. ($49.50, 269 pages.
To order, call CCH at 1-800-248-3248 or visit the CCH Online Store at onlinestore.cch.com.)
Berkowitz analyzes how the scandal unfolded, who the key players
were and the roles they played. He then reviews the reforms that have
been proposed in response to the scandal for the accounting, corporate
governance, legal and securities industries. He illuminates the larger
social and political Issues and lessons to be learned and then turns
the spotlight on ethics in two concluding chapters, "Does It Pay
To Be Ethical" and "There is More to Ethics Than the
Rules." Included in the appendix are a host of source materials,
including key memos and internal documents related to the scandal and
ensuing investigations.
An Analysis For Professionals
Berkowitz maintains that at the heart of the Enron scandal are
conflicts of interest and ethical ambiguities that have become
pervasive in the auditing, corporate governance, financial reporting
and investment analysis fields. While the structural weaknesses that
breed conflicts of interest may be repaired through regulatory and
legal reform, the deeper issue of individual ethical behavior needs to
be addressed at entirely different levels – by industry
associations, firms and companies and, ultimately, by individuals
themselves.
ENRON illuminates these issues in a way that will enable
professionals to look at themselves and their own firms to determine
what changes they need to make to maintain their individual and
firm-wide integrity.
ENRON is the only book published to date on the scandal
specifically for professionals in finance, accounting and auditing. It
includes Continuing Professional Education (CPE) materials and an
extensive appendix of source documents designed to help professionals
fully understand the issues involved and set a definitive and
appropriate personal and firm-wide course of action in response to
this debacle.
ENRON comes complete with study questions and answers and a
quizzer, designed to help professionals earn valuable CPE credits
while learning and responding to these historic new developments
(grading and administration fee additional).
